Remember long before the war That turned children into men Picking berries by the creek side banks Our hands were stained a different red Soon putting on our saddle shoes Meant listening to some country blues Wearing our best Sunday suits not the kind with weeds and roots When a whistle meant supper and Charlotte Russe instead of press on or freeze the troops I recall the water was always warm You and I could hardly wait Wading waist high along the shore Only had till dusk so we both made haste Sifting for sand dollars, driftwood, coral, and more No concept of time yet no second to waste Always something new to explore aspire for tomorrow to do it again A far cry from the oath that we swore Ever eager for what was around the bend No stockpiles no barbed wires just good times in store Before we lurked through the reeds of the fen Orange horizon hues belie memories I miss the most here When we saved up shells by the coast nice and clear Our hands were stained a different red If only that meant what it meant yesteryear
